How To Electrify Your Home blog header image
August 30, 2024

Many homeowners throughout Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland are looking for ways to make their homes healthier and more energy efficient. At Home Energy Medics, we can help with these goals and more with home electrification, or the process of converting fossil fuel burning appliances into all-electric ones.

Gas to electric conversions may seem like a complicated process, however, our team of experts can guide you through the entire process. We offer several services that can help you create an all-electric home, including heat pump installation, heat pump water heater installation, and more.

Before Going All-Electric: Audit Your Home

Before making any home performance or equipment upgrades, it’s important to start with a home energy audit. During this in-depth inspection, our building science specialists will run several tests to determine how well your home is performing in terms of efficiency and safety. These tests include combustion safety, HVAC performance checks, thermal imaging, and more.

From there, Home Energy Medics will make recommendations on services that can prepare your home for electrification, improve indoor air quality, and increase your comfort. All-electric homes are known for efficiency, however if your home is losing energy through air leaks and poor insulation, you may not see much of an improvement.

Addressing these issues before electrifying your home with air sealing and insulation will result in enhanced benefits with your conversion. In some cases, homeowners will also need to upgrade their electric panel before home electrification, and our team will help you determine if it’s a necessary step for your all-electric home project.

The Home Electrification Process

Every home is unique and will have a different set of needs to electrify everything. It’s important to know exactly what appliances in your home run on fossil fuels, such as natural gas, oil kerosene, wood, and coal. At Home Energy Medics, we can help you build a custom plan for home electrification that works with your schedule and budget.

HVAC Electrification: Heat Pump Installation

Heating and cooling use a substantial amount of a home’s energy. In fact, the US Energy Information Administration reports that it accounts for more than half of the average home’s usage. Because of this, HVAC upgrades can drastically reduce fossil fuel consumption and are among the most important for electric homes.

At Home Energy Medics, we install both ducted and ductless mini split heat pumps which can heat and cool your home with all-electric operation. Our experienced team has gone through extensive training on heat pump systems, and we can help find the right option that meets your electrification goals.

Water Heating: Heat Pump Water Heater Installation

According to the Department of Energy, water heating, which traditionally runs on fossil fuels, can use up to 20% of a home’s energy. At Home Energy Medics, we offer an electric alternative to water heating with heat pump water heaters. Utilizing the same technology as a heat pump, heat pump water heaters move heat from the surrounding air via electricity instead of creating it with combustion. The result is reliable and efficient hot water for your home.

Cooking & Clothes Drying

While gas burners were trendy at one time, they produce harmful contaminants that can have a negative impact on both your health and carbon footprint. Electric induction burners can eliminate these risks while offering a more effective method for cooking. Additionally, clothes dryers are a common source of energy waste in a home. Even if your current dryer is electric, upgrading to a more efficient model, like a heat pump dryer, can help you maximize your energy savings.

Home Energy Medics doesn’t currently offer installation of kitchen appliances or clothes dryers. However, our team can handle any electric components to prepare these areas of your home for electrification.

Incentives for the All-Electric Home

There are several rebates and tax credits available throughout Metro-DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia to make your home electrification project more affordable. Our team stays up to date on these incentives to help our customers maximize their savings on home upgrades. These electrification incentives include the 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit, EmPOWER Maryland Rebates, and more. Home Energy Medics can guide you through the process of claiming these incentives and help you find the approximate savings on your retrofit project before you commit to making any upgrades.
